Ways to Test Gold Authenticity
The Stamp Test: Look for Hallmarks

Gold is measured on scales from karat to millesimal fineness. The hallmark test can show if your gold is real.
Hallmarks show how pure the gold is and who made it. They also make it uncomplicated for you to know if the piece is genuine or not. One way to tell if a jeweler is good is if they have their hallmark. But not all are true. There are some who can engrave any hallmark.
If the numbers on your gold are different than the ones mentioned above, then it is fake. For instance, 800, 925, and 950 do not mention gold but silver. Why would they put that on gold? Because this often means that the jewelry is made of pure silver with a gold plating.
You should find out if the marks on the gold are in karats or millesimal fineness. This is what will show that it is real gold. It also means that you need to know if the marks are either of these things. Otherwise, they are fake.

The Size and Weight Test

This is done by computation. You need
- A scale (to weigh the jewelry)
- A vessel of water and
- A way to calculate the level in millimeters is by using a ruler. Put the jewelry in the water and then mark where it was before. Then take it out and measure how much water is on the ruler.
Now you have to do a calculation. Subtract the before calculated from the after measurement. Then divide the weight of your jewelry by the difference in water levels.
This gives you the density.
Real gold has a density of 19.3 grams per milliliter (also written 19.3g/mL). A lot of other metals do not come close to this number. If your calculation offers this figure or something very close to it, you probably have real gold.
Gold can have different densities. Gold that’s not real will be a different density than gold that is real. That’s why when you’re using density to tell if something is made of gold, you need to take into account the type of metal it is too.
Gold is a very heavy metal. The purer the gold, the weighty it will be. White gold is heavier than yellow gold. Therefore, the mass of gold between 14k and 22k will be anywhere between 12.9 and 17.7 for yellow gold and in any place between 13-17.8g/mL for white gold.
The Acid Test

This test is a small experiment. You put one or two drops of vinegar on the metal. The metal should react with the vinegar and change color.
If the metal is real gold, it will not change color. If the metal is fake, it will turn a different color.
- THE NITRIC ACID TEST
Gold is a metal that resists corrosion, oxidation, and acid. To test this, rub your gold on a black stone with something that leaves a mark. Then apply nitric acid to the mark.
This acid will dissolve any metal that is not made of gold.
